What is a Physiotherapist’s expertise?
Physiotherapists study the science of movement. They learn how to pinpoint an injury’s root causes.

When should I go see a Physiotherapist?
Think about getting physiotherapy if you have an injury, or chronic pain that affects how you function everyday. A doctor may refer you to physiotherapy after surgery such as a hip replacement, or an event such as a heart attack or stroke.

If you are planning to use health insurance to help cover the cost of physiotherapy, remember to visit your insurance company's website to ensure the Physiotherapist is covered. If the Physiotherapist is not covered by that insurance company you will not be able to use your benefits and will need to pay the full cost of treatment.

What problems do Physiotherapists treat?
Physiotherapists focus on both prevention and rehabilitation. Treatment can be for problems caused by injury, disease, or disability. Here are some examples:

- Neck and back pain caused by problems in the muscles and skeleton
- Problems in the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments, such as arthritis
- Pelvic issues, such as bladder and bowel problems related to childbirth
- Loss of mobility because of trauma to the brain or spine, or due to diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis
- Fatigue, pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of muscle strength

What can I expect at physiotherapy?
Your session will be unique, because it is all about you and your particular needs. In general, here’s what happens:

1. The Physiotherapist learns about your medical history
2. The Physiotherapist assesses and diagnoses your condition
3. You receive a treatment plan that sets goals for you
4. You are prescribed a course of exercises and any assistive devices needed to achieve your individual goals

Your Treatment:
Before a treatment, your Massage Therapist will propose a personalized treatment plan based on an initial assessment and health history. The assessment consists of various tests to determine the condition of your muscles and joints. Any personal and health information you provide to your Massage Therapist is completely confidential and will be safeguarded. Your health record cannot be released or transferred without your written consent.

Your Massage Therapist must also obtain your consent to work on any part of your body, regardless of whether you are fully clothed, or fully or partially covered with sheets or blankets. Your privacy will always be respected, and you may withdraw your consent for treatment at any time.

Various specialized movements of the hands, over the skin or clothes, make up the Massage Therapy treatment. The Massage Therapist will work with your level of pain tolerance during the treatment, and the treatment can be stopped at any time should the treatment become uncomfortable.

Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many private insurance companies cover treatment from a Massage Therapist as part of their extended healthcare plans. Please consult your Extended Health Care policy to find out if you are covered, or if a Physician's referral is needed

After graduating from McMaster University with his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, Randy perused his interests in human anatomy and movement at George Brown College’s Prosthetics and Orthotics program. This is where he learned the science and the art of assessing and fabricating prosthetic and orthotic (custom orthopaedic bracing) devices for individuals with limb disorders. Building on that background, Randy continued his education in the Pedorthic field and became a Canadian Board Certified Pedorthist or C.Ped(C). They are one of the few healthcare professionals trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and muscle and joint function.

Randy was introduced to osteopathy as a heath care field via his children’s participation in elite sport. He was intrigued with the philosophy of osteopathy and how osteopathic manual practitioners examine and treat the whole body as an inter-related dynamic unit of function- looking for the cause of dysfunction and not just the result or pain. Following his keen interest in osteopathy, Randy attended the 4 year, principles based Osteopathic program at the Canadian Academy of Osteopathy where he earned his certification as a Master of Practice in Osteopathic Manipulative Science (M.OMSc.) and is OSTCAN certified.
